The Problem: Invisible to AI Crawlers
The client — a platform providing compliance documentation tools for mid-market companies — had invested heavily in SEO content. Their blog ranked in the top-5 on Google for 23 target keywords. Their content was genuinely comprehensive, averaging 2,400 words per article. They had implemented Article and FAQPage schema correctly.
But when we queried ChatGPT and Perplexity with their target questions, they never appeared. Not occasionally — never. Even when we queried their exact article titles as questions, AI models cited competitors with shorter, lower-quality content.
The answer was in their server logs. GPTBot was visiting their URLs — but it was abandoning 12% of requests before receiving a complete response. PerplexityBot had a 9% abandonment rate. These weren't 404 errors or blocked requests. The bots were timing out during JavaScript execution.
Diagnosing the Rendering Issue
The client's platform was a Next.js app originally built with heavy client-side rendering (CSR). Their blog posts loaded an initial HTML shell, then fetched article content via API and rendered it with React on the client side. For human readers on fast connections, this worked fine — the content appeared within 1.5 seconds.
For AI crawlers, it was a problem. Crawlers request a URL, wait for the server response, and then — depending on the crawler — may or may not execute JavaScript. Most AI crawlers either don't execute JavaScript at all or have very limited JavaScript execution timeouts (typically under 2 seconds). When GPTBot hit their pages, it received an HTML shell with no article content — just a loading state. It was indexing empty pages.
Verification method: We used Google's URL Inspection tool "Test Live URL" → "View Tested Page" → toggle between "Screenshot" and "HTML." The screenshot showed content; the raw HTML showed only the shell. This is the definitive test for AI crawler rendering issues.
The SSR Migration Strategy
We migrated their blog from client-side rendering to Next.js Server Components — Next.js's approach to server-side rendering that generates full HTML on the server before sending it to the client. The migration was scoped to the blog directory (/blog/**) to minimize risk while addressing the specific pages causing citation failures.
Key migration decisions:
- Server Components for static content: Article titles, body text, headings, metadata, and schema markup — everything that AI crawlers need — moved to Server Components. This content is rendered on the server and included in the initial HTML response.
- Client Components for interactivity only: Social sharing buttons, comment systems, and newsletter signup forms remained as Client Components. These don't affect AI crawler behavior since crawlers don't interact with UI elements.
- Static generation for evergreen content: Articles older than 7 days were migrated to static generation (SSG) — pre-rendered at build time and served from CDN edge nodes as pure HTML. This eliminates server rendering time entirely for established articles.
- ISR for recent content: New articles used Incremental Static Regeneration (ISR) with a 1-hour revalidation window. This keeps content fresh while maintaining the performance benefits of static serving.
Edge Delivery for Global Performance
After the SSR migration, we deployed the blog to Vercel's edge network, serving rendered HTML from the edge node closest to each requesting IP. This was critical for AI crawler performance specifically because crawler farms operate from geographically distributed data centers — not just US-based ones.
Pre-migration, requests from Perplexity's crawler (which operates from European data centers) were hitting US-based servers with 280ms+ round-trip times. With edge deployment, those same requests were served from Frankfurt nodes with 18ms response times. The difference in TTFB made the difference between a completed crawl and a timeout.

Performance Impact
The technical improvements produced measurable changes across all performance dimensions:
- Time to First Byte (TTFB): 420ms → 48ms (global average, measured via WebPageTest from 6 locations)
- Largest Contentful Paint: 3.2s → 1.1s
- AI crawler failure rate: 12% (GPTBot), 9% (PerplexityBot) → 0% for both
- Pages indexed by Bing within 48 hours of publication: 23% → 91%
- Google Core Web Vitals "Good" status: 41% of pages → 97% of pages
Citation Results
We monitored 45 target queries across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini for 90 days post-migration. The citation trajectory:
- Weeks 1–2: No change in citations. AI crawlers were re-indexing pages but hadn't yet propagated changes through citation systems.
- Weeks 3–4: First ChatGPT citations appeared for 3 target queries. Perplexity citations for 5 queries. These were the pages with the strongest content quality — the technical fix unlocked the content value that was already there.
- Weeks 5–8: Steady citation growth. By Week 8, the client appeared in citations for 18 of 45 monitored queries — up from 0.
- Weeks 9–12: Citations stabilized at 24 of 45 queries. Perplexity citations grew 340% (from 0 to 15 queries). ChatGPT citations reached 11 queries.
The technical improvement didn't create new authority — it removed the barrier that was preventing existing authority from being recognized. The content was always good enough. The crawler just couldn't see it.
When SSR Matters for AI Search: A Decision Framework
Not every site needs a full SSR migration. Here's how to determine if this is your primary citation blocker:
- Run the URL Inspection test on your top 5 articles. Compare the HTML source with the visual screenshot. If the HTML doesn't contain your article body text, you have a rendering problem.
- Check server logs for AI crawler abandonment rates. Any AI crawler abandonment rate above 5% indicates a rendering or performance issue worth investigating.
- Test your TTFB from multiple global locations using WebPageTest. If TTFB exceeds 300ms from any major region, edge delivery will improve AI crawler success rates.
- Query your top articles in ChatGPT by title. If ChatGPT can't find or cite an article when you ask about it directly, that article likely isn't in its retrieval index — a strong indicator of a rendering or indexation problem.
